FUTILISM
futile /ˈfjuː.t̬əl/
adj incapable of producing any useful result; vain.
This piece is my final project for CUE Digital Media Design Lab taught by Tony Dalton this spring semester, where he basically said “This is a chance for all of you to do something you’ve always wanted to in college but never had the chance.”
For someone who’s very much excited by the organic values of physical goods, it just hit me how it’d be cool seeing favorite pieces of my visual projects manifest in some form of merchandise. Printmaking I also helped me a lot with developing ideas, especially the All About Prints documentary Professor Yangbin had us watch in class that introduced me to famous contemporary printmakers who made use of the layering techniques in so many clever and practical ways, such as taking newsprints and old photographs and blending them together as to create unique textures and patterns. Then, I got super inspired after a decent proof of my first linoleum block ever of my favorite ‘good for health, bad for education’ Akira pill. I sprinted back to my room right after class, scanned the proof with my phone, loaded a bunch of old files into Photoshop and started messing around.
Over the course of two months filled with endless peer feedback, re-editing, color and material testing, I’m happy to finally present FUTILISM and FUTILISM_invert to all of you who seem to have enjoyed what I made in the past few years. I’d like to send all the love I could give to every special person who has wholeheartedly supported this imperfect process of mine from scratch to the finalized sample. None of this could have been made concrete without you. You know who you are.
This shirt is made up of my past experiments and assignments and random moments. It’ll be incredibly exciting if any of you decides to look long enough and discover where each segment comes from. The text is an excerpt from the manifesto I wrote for Central European Cinema within the Context of World Cinema during my time at FAMU Prague, in which I come up with an avant-garde movement of my own called Futilism that revolves around young people who either feel too big or too small for this world. My invented term “Futilism” derives from the adjective “futile,” meaning incapable of producing any useful result; ineffectual—the hollow emotional state I easily fall into once in a while since adulthood started. I remember sitting with my favorites in a fantastic Italian place near our Sokolská apartment on a Sunday morning and having such a good conversation on this paper, which I absolutely felt both passionate and anxious about.
I’m not making any profit out of this small-scale stuff since everything is for the sake of showcase—and the total price only accounts for the service fees the printer is charging me. Given that the shirt is heat-pressed on both sides, the fabric might feel kind of rough at first, but this actually helps achieve the vintage paper-like form and this material gradually gets softer after each laundry as well.
